Vitality

What does Vitality mean to us?

At HVRC, vitality means actively creating a life in which one is flourishing physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. It extends to all parts of our lives and allows us to thrive in our relationships, careers, and communities. Cultivating our vitality and well-being enables us to generate more positive emotions and have greater life satisfaction. Research has shown that increased well-being has numerous health benefits, including a positive impact on heart and cardiovascular disease, blood pressure, inflammation, and the immune system. Positive states, such as joy, optimism, and sense of humor have been shown to have protective effects on health and predict longevity (Diener & Chan, 2011).

HVRC courses focus on those aspects of well-being which are enduring and enable humans to thrive, such as engaging in supportive social relationships, self-development and mastery, autonomy, and finding meaning and purpose in life. We explore the mind-body connection and how we can skillfully use this knowledge to promote physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual health.

Vitality in our Curriculum

Participants in the HVRC program will examine the science of vitality and well-being in its numerous facets, engage in experiential exercises to help develop vitality and well-being, and discuss practical applications. We examine the scientific evidence on well-being, its physical and emotional benefits, and the challenges to well-being. Through conscious effort, participants learn how to generate, build, and maintain positive emotions; develop hope and realistic optimism; and increase compassion and self-compassion through a variety of straightforward practices, such as brain training, heart-centered exercises, meditation, mindfulness, and the arts, which can be incorporated into everyday life. Leaders will learn how to model the behavior of vitality and help develop well-being in others.  This program is also trauma-sensitive.
