Resilience
What does Resilience mean to us?
Often we think of resilience as something that happens as a result of a hardship in our lives from which we recover or “bounce back”. While this is true, it assumes that we have to wait for something bad to happen to us to give us the opportunity to become resilient as a result of the experience. It also implies that we return to our former state. This is an incomplete picture of what it means to be truly resilient. The science of resilience is showing that in addition to bouncing back from adversity, we can actually prepare in advance for the challenges of life which eventually we all face. Research also shows that rather than revert to our previous state, we can learn and grow from life’s challenges, creating personal resources from which we can draw on to better handle future stresses.
