Courage
What does Courage mean to us?
In his article “The Emotions of Courage”, University of Wisconsin professor Daniel Putman said that “courage involves deliberate choice in the face of painful or fearful circumstances for the sake of a worthy goal” (Putman, 2001). Overcoming fear requires confidence, which includes knowing one’s skills and abilities. The origin of the word courage comes from the Latin “cor”, meaning heart. HVRC helps you access the power of the heart and the brain to give you the confidence to make deliberate choices in the face of painful or difficult circumstances by helping you develop the skills of resilience, vitality, and well-being. We help you build on your strengths and grow greater inner resources to meet challenges, live by your values, and clarify your path ahead.
At HVRC, we understand that courage is not the absence of fear. Rather, it is the capacity to examine fear with curiosity, seek out its reason for being, learn the lesson it is trying to teach us, and then respond to the situation with confidence, rather than react out of despair. By growing resilience and a positive mindset, we help participants see opportunity and meaning in adversity while confronting the situation with realistic optimism. This creates the personal transformation needed to bring about true courage, the ability to respond effectively in the face of difficulty while embracing and learning from our emotions, allowing us to continue toward our goals.
